Running Economy refers to how efficiently your body uses energy while running at a given pace. A runner with good running economy uses less oxygen and expends less energy to maintain the same speed compared to a less efficient runner.
Running economy is influenced by factors such as biomechanics and gait pattern, stride efficiency, muscle strength and stiffness, posture and stability & training history and conditioning
Improving running economy can help runners reduce fatigue, maintain pace longer, improve race performance, decrease unnecessary stress on joints and tissues. Improving running economy reduces the chances of overuse injuries, calf tightness, shin splints, plantar fasciitis and hip or knee pain.
